LNSEMSF

Courtesy of Steve Hosack, I present to you the Leonard Nimoy Should Eat More Salsa Foundation official website. If any of you actually have souls, you should join.

From the site:

“We here at the LNSEMSF believe that Leonard Nimoy is excellent, and salsa is excellent, and if Leonard Nimoy would eat more salsa, he would become an unstoppable force of excellence. For anybody doubting this belief, we have researched the projected level of Leonard Nimoy’s excellence with and without salsa.”

They even have data to support their findings.? I’m in awe…

This is it…

Yeah, very shortly, I will be attending classes at Saint Louis University, “officially” making me feel like a graduate student (the summer thus far hasn’t been much besides a “job,” of sorts…now I actually have to study and such…). This is both exciting and rather scary, the former due to the fact that I get to finally delve in to my chosen profession…the latter because…well…it’s graduate school… Likely this will be my largest challenge to date. The really odd parts follow:

    — I am going to school at a new place with new people and new professors.
    — I am at the bottom of the food chain again, much like I was five years ago at Truman.
    — I don’t have as many friends/bar buddies in this town, so I won’t be as socially active as in recent years.
    — Along with that, I’m married now, so my roommate won’t be able to help me in my classes as in recent years…on the other hand, it’s easier now that I don’t have to make time to go to my girlfriend’s place to hang out with her once and awhile…she’s conveniently at my place all the time now… 😛
    — I no longer have “responsibilities,” such as attending AXE meetings, Wesley House functions, or working for ITS. It’s school and home. That’s it.
    — I have to drive to class every morning. Snow or not. And fight for parking.

So yeah, completely new shenanigans to deal with. Really, I’m the same old person in a completely new environment…making me wonder how I’ll deal with the situation. Will I study as much as I should? Will I make it to class on time? Or at all? Will I be able to manage money better now that I’m married and on my own? Will my personality remain the same, or should I expect another paradigm shift as what occurred in college? …or will I wake up tomorrow and still be in my bed at the old apartment in Kirksville?

…as Spock once said: “Life…is not a dream.” And as he also said, in a different movie, I “will perform as according to one’s gifts.” Hopefully I’m as prepared as I can be for the flames I am to be thrust in to….’cause it’s going to be close to five years that I’m roasting in them…

“Sounds like fun.” (…that was Kirk, this time…)

Scotty…beamed up for good…

James Doohan, of Star Trek fame, died today at the age of 85 battling Alzheimer’s disease and pneumonia. He will be missed, of course; the man did Star Trek conventions up until last August, which is crazy considering how old the man was. He was a testament to what Star Trek means to a lot of us fans out there, and to the rest of humanity.

So true…

“Well, Bible…Wrath of Kahn…what’s the difference?”
— Kyle Brovloski; South Park

Dude…I’m telling you…Star Trek rocks…so does Stargate…but not as good at Star Trek

Of Star Trek and Christianity…

“If his words hold wisdom and his philosophy is honorable, what does it matter if he returns? What is important is that we follow his teachings. Perhaps the words are more important than the man.”
— Kahless, ST: TNG

In the episode “Rightful Heir” of Star Trek: TNG, religious leaders clone their Jesus-type character, called Kahless (they’re Klingons…w00t…), in order to speed up his prophesized return. He finds out he’s a clone later and says the above quote…I thought it was very appropriate to Christians in today’s day and age…especially the more conservative ones…

Ironically, I drove by Woodcrest earlier today, where on their sign I see: “Where one visit can change the way you view church.” I have long disliked this church and many “mega churches” like it because what they call “church” becomes more of a production and presentation, rather than an opportunity for learning, communing and fellowship. Granted, I’m all about contemporary worship, but there’s a fine line where the congregation begins to expect entertainment rather than the true purpose of worship.

All Good Things…

That was the title of the final episode of Star Trek: TNG, widely regarded as the best of the Star Trek franchise television shows…and it is representative of where I sit today… As of 3:30 pm this afternoon, June 10, 2005, I will no longer be employed in the Truman ITS department… I think this is of significance for a few reasons. First of all, this is the longest amount of time I’ve ever worked at a job (4 years, almost entirely without stopping…there was one summer I didn’t work up here…). Secondly, this is the highest I’ve ever advanced in a job (…promoted to “lab manager” after my first year…worked in that role ever since…).

The third reason, however, is the clincher… This marks the cutting of my final umbilical connection to Truman State. After today, I will not attend class here, will not work here, will not need to be at Truman State for any reason (besides visiting folks, of course…). Today marks the first day in 5 years that I will never have to be here…ever…again… Today marks the end of an era of my life, the final chapter in perhaps the most exciting volume thus far… Subsequently, the next volume promises to encompass a much wider scope, including marriage, graduate school, and insurance in my own name…and it’s going to be weird…

…but in the end…it’ll still be a good read…

Moving on…

So I’ve been going through closets, etc. getting ready for moving in 2 weeks…kinda crazy the stuff I’m finding, honestly… For example, I was going through a box of old computer stuff from Freshman year and found my move-out clearance slip from the dorms (there wasn’t any damage, for the record…I was a good tenant…). I also ran across an old 4 MB video card and then an old (fried…) 16 MB card, too…the former was ISA (everything now is PCI or PCIe)…so yeah, old stuff that should have been cleaned out years and years ago…

It’s kinda weird moving out, honestly… I mean, I have lived in this apartment for 3 years (including summers) and have accumulated lots of crap… I can only imagine what it’ll be like when I eventually own a house and have even more stuff sitting around…guess I’ll have to be a bit more organized in the future… The really crazy thing is that it’s finally sinking in that I’m actually leaving… As early as July, I’ll be in a new apartment, a new city, a new school, and a new wife… Lots of stuff changing, so who knows how I’ll deal with all of it… “As according to one’s gifts” I guess, as Spock would say (Star Trek II)…

Of Star Trek and rap music…

So yeah, according to TrekToday, there should be another Star Trek movie in production in the next 2 or 3 years… Jerry and I watched Star Trek: Nemesis yesterday, the last one that was made, and it still irked me how poorly it did in theaters, even though the acting and special effects were better than Episode III… Hopefully in a few years, it’ll be time for Star Trek to once again take its place in the annals of cable TV science fiction…but for now, I’ll just have to be satisfied with Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis… 😛

On another note, it appears that Cirroc Lofton is producing a rap album… For those who don’t know (i.e. everyone reading this…), he played Jake Sisko on Star Trek: DS9. Apparently, one of the songs will be some kind of hip-hop version of the original theme song…and this worries me greatly… On the other hand, maybe it’ll actually be better than William Shatner’s “musical offerings”…

Finding Nemo?!

So yeah, Time Magazine released their 100 Greatest Movies list and it includes the likes of Psycho, The Lord of the Rings, Casablanca, It’s A Wonderful Life, Star Wars…and friggin’ Finding Nemo. Seriously…Finding Nemo…granted, it was an excellent movie and won Best Animated Feature of the Year at the Oscars…but is it really one of the 100 Greatest Movies of All time?!!? …there are at least 6 Star Trek movies I can think of that are better than that one….I can think of various animated movies that are better (Aladdin and The Lion King…). I’m thinking that Time may be losing some credibility, yo…
