Review: “Grizzly Man” and “Hotel Rwanda”

So, DISHnetwork has been kind enough to give us free movie weekends on Showtime and Starz! recently, therefore our DVR has been busy recording stuff.? We caught up with a few movies from awhile back yesterday:

Grizzly Man was about Timothy Treadwell, a self-proclaimed “bear savior” who spent 13 summers in Alaska “protecting” the bears there.? He took over 100 hours of video footage, some of which is in this 3 hour documentary.? The rest of the movie involves interviews with Timothy’s friends and relatives.? You see, Timothy was mauled by a bear up in Alaska…and, honestly, watching himself on the recordings just shows how nuts he really was…and I say “nuts” in the “clinically insane” sort of way.?? I mean, he had no scientific background…he just went up there and spent the summer living with bears…with no knowledge of their lives and how they’re wild animals…? While you have to admire his dedication to the cause, you also have to realize that he treated grizzly bears like people…he would follow them around and talk to them and pet them…and he would also talk to foxes and tell them how much he loves them.? Each animal got a different name.? This guy was crazy.? Overall, it was a pretty good movie, but started to feel pretty long toward the end…

Hotel Rwanda, on the other hand, was a really good movie. ? It centers on the true story of a man in Rwanda that took in refugees during the murder of about 1,000,000 Tutsi people by the Hutu (well, both sides had heavy losses).? As Wikipedia tells us, the really sad thing is how little anyone did to intervene.? There are many scenes where the UN has “peacekeepers” down there, yet they can’t fire and can’t protect anyone…? Don Cheadle’s character saved over 1,200 people by putting them in the hotel he manages, keeping their presence a secret for a long time, then helping to get them out of the country.? The only downside is that the movie gets kinda confusing, not knowing which side is who and what exactly is going on…? I recommend looking up a little info on the Rwandan genocide before watching, just so you have a little basis of what’s going on…? Supposedly, the movie is pretty accurate, from a historical point of view…which is that much more depressing…

So yeah, a few movies to check out…w00t to lazy Saturdays…

So, Brooke and I were watching “Numb3rs” last night and she asked the following:

“Is it cold in here…or am I just crazy?”

…to which…I responded simply in uncontrollable laughter…

Eeeeesh…

So, Brooke and I are watching “Monk,” which is one of the best shows ever made as far as I’m concerned…and we were looking up previous things that Tony Shaloub has been in… Do you realize that “Wings,” for which he is best known, started in 1990 and ended in 1997?? Almost 10 years ago now?!? Do you realize how old I am?!?!?

…dammit…

Joining the 21st Century…

So, Brooke and I made the switch from basic (i.e. not digital) cable last week to DISH network. We’re getting a few less channels (about 65 channels total…) than we did, but we have their DVR service for $10 less per month, without having to pay for equipment or set-up.

So far, the service is pretty damned good. I’ve only noticed one time when the reception wavered a bit (watching “SVU” last night…), but it wasn’t that detrimental to my viewing experience. The DVR itself will record up to two things at once and has a 100 hour limit to what it can store, so we’ve got every show we regularly watch during the week programmed. Actually, we have it specifically set to only record new episodes, rather than all of them.

Overall, it’s pretty cool. Nice to not have to record everything to VCR…that, and I can now pause “The Daily Show” when I take a shower and come back to it when I’m ready…w00t! 😛

…here we go again…

I’ve got my second exam tomorrow…and I really haven’t studied all that much for it… Honestly, I could very well get burned on this one, but it’s hard to see how…and at the same time it is… We’ve been learning about basic genetics and replication/repair mechanisms for DNA…which, again, are all things I’ve seen before (some of it as early as 10th grade…). At the same time, it isn’t necessarily the easiest stuff in the world, frequently involving somewhat complicated probability calculations. So yeah, I’m unsure as to whether I’m supposed to be really worried or not. Since it’s graded on a curve, as long as I stay where I am right now (i.e. in the middle), I’m completely golden for keeping above a “B” average. Therefore, I’m spending today in full-speed cramming mode to get all this stuff back in my head…since a great deal of it was there a few years ago already…

Other than that, I’m trying to decide whether to go to Kirksville next weekend. Brooke is working, so she can’t go…but Stu/Angela are going (it’s Homecoming…geez, I’m a dork…) and I wouldn’t mind seeing the new science building in completion…let alone a few folks that I haven’t seen in awhile (i.e. since the wedding, in some cases). Besides that, I’m looking forward to two things this week:

1). “The Colbert Report” premieres on Comedy Central this Monday after “The Daily Show“… The latter is a show of complete genius, so I’m hoping the new one lives up to the standard. Stephen Colbert is a damned funny guy, so I don’t think it can suck too much…

2). Oh, it’s baseball season again…and the NLCS/ALCS are both going on strong. I never really follow baseball at all, but it’s always fun to watch games this time of year. Going for the Astros, anyone? 😉

…I guess I’m also looking forward to this test being done…but let’s take one thing at a time, shall we?

P.S. La Russa and Edmonds have both been thrown out of game 4 in the NLCS…I’m highlyamused…

…busy-ness, etc…

Yeah, school is keeping me busy, but not too busy… We got our exams back yesterday (I got a B+…not too terrible for the first exam…), so now we’ve moved on to DNA replication/repair in class…it’s been about 4 years since taking Genetics at Truman, so it isn’t quite as clear in my head as biochem was in the last unit, but it’s coming back to me…slowly… Anyway, it’s causing me to do more reading than I’d prefer…thankfully, I can do most, if not all, of it while I’m doing work at the lab in the afternoons.

That leaves me a lot of time for TV. I’m realizing how old I am since I’ve got shows to watch every weeknight…which really sucks, since I’m supposed to be studying, etc. This is mostly Brooke’s fault, of course…if she wasn’t watching these shows, then I wouldn’t have gotten “in” to them over summer… So yeah, I’ve got 3 “CSI” shows to watch during the week, “Law & Order: SVU,” “Threshold,” “Numb3rs,” etc…and the World Series of Poker is on Tuesday nights as well… I can easily sit in front of the TV for 3.5 hours almost every night of the week…which is terrible, but almost unavoidable… My VCR gets quite a workout every night, it seems…

Anyway, Brooke’s ‘rents are visiting on Friday and taking us to a Card’s game, which is cool…the 3rd-to-last regular-season game at Busch Stadium (which means absolutely nothing, truthfully…). Otherwise, I’m hopefully getting some poker played on Saturday…been a few weeks since I did that… Playing with the praise band at Webster Hills tonight, and then again on Sunday morning…looking forward to that, of course…

So, basically, life goes on. Nothing too fascinating to report…except that Brooke is this close to starting substitute teaching, which will bring in some much-needed income to a relatively poor couple…and by “poor” I don’t mean “bad”…I mean “financially lacking”… 😛

P.S. …there’s a calendar link up top…since I now have my calendar online…if you wanna know which weekends we’re in Columbia/Hannibal/etc., that’s the place to check…w00t…

Oh, arrogance…

You know, I’m sure I’ve had some arrogant moments in my lifetime…but seriously… I was watching “The Daily Show” tonight and Stephen Colbert did his usual “This Week in God” bit, generally talking about Hurricane Katrina and how multiple conservative Christian groups were trying to give evidence that it was a sign from God… During the clip, he showed a few clips from our good friend Pat Robertson…

…who apparently…now has his own diet shake…I kid you not…

Have you been by Pat Robertson.com lately? I certainly have… It’s kinda funny just to read the links off the main page, where multiple links are directed at clarifying statements that the idiot has made (…about Hugo Chavez, during an interview with George Stephanopolis, another regarding Liberia, etc.). The man really is full of himself, and certainly has a lot of people believing him… I really wish I could say that he has his heart in the right place, but I can’t…I just think he’s insane…

I guess when I open up the newspaper next week and see that good ‘ol Pat took some people on a “religious outing” to Waco, TX. with the FBI in tow, I won’t be too terribly surprised…

Current TV

Many of you heard about Al Gore, et al. purchasing a TV news network last year and developing a news channel developed at younger audiences, known as Current TV. Yahoo! News says that the channel is targeted at “Internet-savvy viewers 18 to 34 years old” and features “professionally produced segments and viewer-produced videos running from a few seconds to 15 minutes in length,” known as “pods.”

I’m very happy that there’s a new channel out there (although, we don’t get it in St. Louis, sadly…) providing news to a youth-targeted audience. Many people my age get their news from the Daily Show more than they do from any other source…this is great, ’cause it’s an awesome show, yet it still leaves much to be desired. Also, and perhaps more important, this station will have a more liberal bias than all of the other 24-hour news networks.

…let the games begin. 😉
