Coldplay = Bad

Okay, seriously…Coldplay sucks…they really do…they are absolutely no good and their “music” is heavily overplayed. It makes me not want to listen to radio ever (not that I do often…but since there weren’t any good stations in Kirksville for my five years there, I’ve been trying to listen in St. Louis…).

I don’t really know why I bring this up, honestly…I guess I’m just wondering why people like them? They aren’t original, the guy sings way too high pitched for comprehension…there are various blog postings from people who hate them…some more amusing than others… Here’s even a review by the New York Times (June 5, 2005) that just trashes the album and the band…

The band plays and writes songs for the high school crowd, just like the boy bands did…songs made to make money…to make little high school girls fawn over them with their sappy, uncreative lyrics, most of which have been ripped off other, better songs… Frequently, Coldplay is considered to be a lesser, sappier, Radiohead imitator… They haven’t been innovating like the Smashing Pumpkins, Dave Matthews Band (and the other “jam bands,” like OAR, or even the Grateful Dead), or even U2…so what gives?! Coldplay is just a lighter version of Nickelback…seriously…same music, but slower and more depressing…

So…why the hell do people like them so much? Please. Answer me that. I don’t understand. I mean, I guess I don’t understand why the “boy bands” were so successful a few years back…but I can go with hearing the “Macarena” again rather than another Coldplay song…

  1. …Okay, seriously… Ellipses suck… they really do… they are absolutely no good and their “use” is heavily overdone. It makes me not want to read weblogs ever (not that I do often… but since there my Kirksville friends are gone, I’ve been trying to read them in St. Louis).

I don?t really know why I bring this up, honestly… I guess I?m just wondering why people use them? They aren?t original, they clutter up paragraphs and forgo sentence structure… there are various blog postings from people who hate them…

  2. You know, I didn’t even know that “…” was an “elipsis” until last year, I think…just didn’t know it had a name… Yes, I’ve used them for years and I don’t know why…and I’m not stopping anytime soon πŸ˜‰ At least I don’t use a flurry of “brb,” “lol,” or “rofl”…’cause that’s simply dumb. That, and I hate short sentences like: “I had a good day today. I did nothing. It was glorious.” Tying them together with a “…” shows a continuation of the thought, as opposed to separating it into short, less useful sentences.

  3. Seriously Andy this Mike person has a point. You are the king of ellipses. Just deal with the end of a sentence. Do you get that distracted that you can’t continue writing or reading on to the next sentence without an extra two periods?
haha…you know I’m just giving you a hard time because I listen to coldplay sometimes and that scientist song or whatever it is they play.

  4. First off… during this response I will make frequent use of the elipse.

Coldplay is a bastardized version of Radiohead… as you said. Except that Radiohead is awesome and Coldplay is below average… I wouldn’t say terrible.

I do take slight to you saying they are worse than Nickelback though. You know what is really the same music as Nickelback…

    SWITCHFOOT!

In conclusion, a ranking chart of the bands mentioned…

    1) Radiohead
    2) Smashing Pumpkins
    3) Grateful Dead
    4) Dave Mathews/OAR (tie)
    5) Coldplay
    6) Switchfoot/Nickelback (tie)

  5. Hey! Yeah I started the blog because I was bored at work. But I haven’t really been keeping up with it.

  6. Switchfoot’s recent album isn’t all that awesome, in my opinion…but they’re older stuff is great…and well above Nickelback and Coldplay…leaps and bounds above Coldplay, just because only little high school girls (and Nathan and me…) like Switchfoot, but a lot of little high school girls AND college girls and their boyfriends (who don’t have the balls to like their own music…) like Coldplay…

  7. Nathan – I was at Andy’s wedding. You took pictures of me getting my ass spanked at poker. I’m the big tall dumb looking one.

I don’t listen to the radio so I don’t exactly have that particular reason to dislike Coldplay.

I put Coldplay above Switchfoot because I like 1 Coldplay song (the one on the Garden State soundtrack), and I don’t like any Switchfoot songs (although I have only heard a handful). So there you go.

  8. yeah- switchfoots old stuff is what’s good.
((Annnnnnddd, as I suspect you already know, ..i was just kidding…))

  9. wow, you guys really need to find something better to do with your time besides argue about which band is worse. And, I must be honest, I actually bought the new Coldplay album. Why, you may ask, especially since I haven’t actually bought a CD since somewhere close to 10th grade. My only explanation is that I actually LIKED the first album, and thought the second would be comparable. not true….in fact I do agree that it is very lacking. HOWEVER, I must also point out that my big bro here often does not like something simply because it is “trendy,” which I don’t think is a valid reason to dislike something. PLUS, Switchfoot is becoming increasingly more trendy and, in fact, a lot of their music I would call WAY overplayed. Why then do you not dislike them?
I’m also curious about what kind of music Andy S. thinks is actually GOOD….I’m almost afraid to ask…
    (I like elipses too…..I think they’re neat…) … … … …. ……

  10. As far as I know, Coldplay has always been trendy…whereas Switchfoot has 3 perfectly good (even better) albums than the one that made them popular a few years ago… Their first, second and third albums were completely different from each other, beginning from a grittier, rougher sound in the first, to a more refined sound by the third. Then, they hit that “pop” phase… So yeah, I’d agree that some Switchfoot songs are overplayed…but really only 2 or 3 songs… Coldplay, on the other hand, seems to have 50 played 24-7 on the teeny bopper radio stations…so while Switchfoot songs are played a few times a day, Coldplay songs are played every third song…

  11. Let me first say that I do not think a band is necessarily bad just because it is trendy. Nirvana was trendy and it wasn’t bad. Radiohead had its time and was obviously incredible. I also have liked Death Cab for Cutie for a long time, and apparently they are all over the OC now. Perhaps they are trendy now because of that (I honestly don’t know, we have absolutely no radio stations in san antonio), but they are still great.

Kristin, I am assuming that saying you are afraid to ask means you are actually asking! So here goes! My favorite bands include – Coheed and Cambria, Radiohead, At the Drive In, The Mars Volta, The Smiths, Wilco, Death Cab for Cutie, The Shins, The Format, Thursday, Thrice, Pink Floyd, Ben Folds, Jimmy Eat World, the Pixies, etc.

  12. Thank you so much! I freakin’ hate Coldplay! That guy’s voice is obnoxious and his vocal range is not what he chooses to usually sing in. Grrrr….I don’t understand. (but..I also don’t like Dave Matthew’s or Smashing Pumpkins so..)

  13. oh, Andy, you have such a knack for wild overexaggeration……

Oh, other Andy, I didn’t know you had such interesting taste. I guess I pictured you as a DMB-type fan… I haven’t even heard of several of those groups, but YAY for Jimmy Eat World!!
